Federația Indiană de Industrie și Comerț a subliniat că recrutarea în campusurile companiei în 2012 a scăzut cu 40% față de 2009. Raportul a subliniat că, în afară de primele 20 de școli de afaceri din India, doar 10% de absolvenți își pot găsi un loc de muncă imediat după absolvire. În 2008, acest raport a ajuns la 54%. În 2012, în orașe mari precum New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Lucknow și Dehradun, peste 180 de școli de afaceri s-au închis din cauza lipsei de studenți. Există, de asemenea, peste 160 de școli de afaceri care se confruntă cu dificultăți și se așteaptă să se închidă în 2013.
DS Rawat, secretarul general al Federației Camerelor de Comerț și Industrie din India, a subliniat că unul dintre principalele motive pentru închiderea la scară largă a școlilor de afaceri este extinderea rapidă a facultăților de management din nivelurile doi și trei, însă calitatea predării nu poate fi garantată. „Sute de facultăți de inginerie și management au fost deschise, dar majoritatea managerilor se concentrează pe construcția de campusuri și pe oportunitățile de angajare. Puțini oameni sunt preocupați de infrastructură și de construirea de cadre didactice și nici nu sunt conștienți de necesitatea de a crea suficiente oportunități practice pentru studenți.”
Raportul Camerei de Comerț și Industrie din India a subliniat, de asemenea, că, în noul context global de afaceri, școlile de afaceri trebuie să își actualizeze și să își recalifice profesorii. Multe școli de afaceri nu pot face acest lucru, ceea ce face adesea ca conținutul cursurilor lor să fie redundant. Lavot a spus că, dacă programa școlilor de afaceri nu răspunde nevoilor întreprinderilor, absolvenții acestora nu vor avea capacitatea de angajare necesară și vor rămâne șomeri după absolvire. Singura opțiune pentru școlile de afaceri nu poate fi decât închiderea școlilor.
David H. Turpin, președintele Universității din Victoria, a observat o tendință tulburătoare în rândul colegilor săi din Canada: fie că a fost voluntară, fie forțată, numărul persoanelor care pleacă este în continuă creștere. El a constatat că, în perioada de cinci ani, 2006-2011, 12 reședințe de universități canadiene și-au părăsit locul de muncă în doar trei ani sau mai puțin de trei ani. Din perioada de cinci ani, 2001-2006, doar patru persoane s-au aflat în această situație. Deși aceste exemple pot părea puține, ele reflectă situația reședinței universității a unei optimi din țară. În plus, el a constatat, de asemenea, că: În ultima jumătate de secol, mandatul reședinței universității s-a redus de la 13 ani în anii 1950 la mai puțin de 6 ani în prezent. La fel ca Canada, Statele Unite au puține date fiabile despre mandatul reședinților universităților. În general, se crede că durata medie a mandatelor reședinților universităților este de 8-10 ani.
În prezent, Universitatea de Universități și Colegii din Canada îl ajută pe directorul lui Tobin să extindă domeniul de aplicare al cercetărilor sale. Paul Davidson, președintele comitetului, a declarat: „Am recunoscut necesitatea de a depune eforturi pentru a înțelege acest fenomen.” El a menționat că, din 2009, 47 dintre cei 95 de reședințe universitare din Canada au fost numiți recent.
Președintele Tobin a adăugat că aceasta este doar o constatare preliminară și că sunt necesare mai multe cercetări pentru a înțelege această tendință și a recomanda soluții. El consideră că presiunea asupra liderilor universitari de astăzi este în creștere, ceea ce ar putea fi unul dintre principalele motive ale plecării lor premature.
Tobin însuși va părăsi funcția de președinte al Universității Victoria în iunie 2013. Ocupă această funcție de 12 ani. În calitate de biochimist și psiholog specializat în plante, intenționează să își folosească metodele științifice pentru a continua studiul mandatului reședinților universităților canadiene. Indiferent de domeniul în care se concentrează atenția sa, președintele Tobin consideră în continuare cu pasiune că a conduce o universitate este „cea mai frumoasă muncă din lume”.
